Samsung’s Galaxy Fold launched in Australia last month to mostly positive reviews. Despite its great specs and performance, there are a few drawbacks, namely the $3000 price tag and concerns over the durability of the screen.
With the 2nd Generation Samsung Galaxy Fold due for release in 2020, and the inevitability that foldable phones will only get better from here, we thought we’d take a look at the devices it will be up against. Here are some of the best new phones coming out in 2020.
You can read more about the pros and cons of the Samsung Fold below:
iPhone X Fold
The iPhone X Fold is just a rumour, but if it does happen it will be in 2020. The only real indication that Apple is planning a folding phone is their patent for a foldable display. While there have been no official announcements, there are many fan-made renders online which are based on the patented images. As with all Apple products, it is likely to be both beautiful and expensive.
Microsoft Surface Duo
According to Microsoft, the Surface Duo isn’t a phone. They didn’t mention the word at the product launch nor does it feature in any of Microsoft’s marketing material. Yet you can make phone calls and send texts with it.
Confused?
Microsoft chief product officer, Panos Panay, attempted to clarify with this statement:
“You’re going to communicate with it more than any other device, but the fundamental truth behind it is that, by calling the Surface Duo a phone, I thought it would take away from the product. So we didn’t.” (source)
Whether we end up calling it a phone, a tablet or a surface, it will be interesting to see how Microsoft’s re-entry into the smartphone market pans out.
Motorola Razr V4
Everything old is new again. The iconic Motorola Razr flip phone, first launched in 2004, will be back in 2020. Due to be released in Australia in January, the new Razr phone capitalises on the folding phone trend while staying true to its beloved retro flip phone stylings. It won’t be cheap (priced at $1500 USD), but the design looks impressive and it will appeal to those who remember when phones were small. Not to mention the satisfying clap sound of closing a flip phone. There’s also an external screen so you can quickly check messages and calls much like a smart watch.
